Meet our Staff for the 2021-22 school year!

Kait Zerr - 4th Grade

My name is Kait Zerr and I am the fourth grade teacher here at CVA. This will be my second year teaching and I absolutely cannot wait. I graduated from CU Boulder with a Bachelors in Media Design and my Elementary Education licensure a few years ago. I am currently getting my masters from CU in Curriculum and Instruction Literacy Education K-12. I have lived in CO my whole life and come from a family of 6, with two very cute labradoodles. I love spending time with my family, going camping, and traveling. Excited for the year ahead!.

Monica Kalina - Spanish Teacher

Hello, my name is Monica Kalina. My students call me “Señora Kalina”. I currently live in Frederick, CO, but I am originally from Colombia.
I am a happy wife and mom of three kids, and my youngest one attends CVA.

I enjoy teaching my language to children, teens, and adults. I also love to explore and dig into the beautiful and interesting cultures of Latin America in a fun way with my students.

I hold a Bachelors’s degree in Modern Languages from La Universidad de la Costa in Barranquilla, Colombia.
I am a member of ACTFL ( American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).

My favorite season is the Fall, when the trees change color. I like to travel and spend time with my family and friends.

Nick Harris - PE Teacher

My name is Nick Harris (aka Mr. Hair or Mr. McHarrison). I am a Colorado native and this will be my third year as the PE teacher at CVA.

This summer, I also became a newlywed after marrying the love of my life, Emily, in Omaha, NE. In fact, at the time of writing this, I have been a husband for approximately 49 hours.

Outside of teaching, I am also the head track coach at Holy Family HS in Broomfield, CO. This summer, I got to go to Hayward Field (the Mecca of track and field) in Eugene, OR, after ten of my athletes qualified for Nationals for the first time in the school’s history. Four of them even ended up becoming All-Americans!

Stephanie Corral - 1st Grade

Hello CVA Families! My name is Stephanie Corral, and I am one of your new 1st grade teachers. I am married with four children, a sweet doberman, and a mischievous cat. This will be my 5th year teaching 1st grade. I love sports, traveling, and playing in the mountains. I grew up in the Chicago area, but moved around a bit while my husband was in the Air Force. After almost 12 years of living on the east coast, we got to finally choose where we wanted to live – we chose Colorado, and moved here in July 2020! I taught in Longmont for one year, and was thrilled to see a 1st grade opening at CVA – as I live just up the street in Firestone. I can’t wait to get to know this amazing community that I have heard such wonderful things about. Cheers!

Holly Marshall - 5th Grade

I am so excited to start the new school year — especially as a 5th-grade teacher! This is my fourth year in education. I graduate from UNC in 2016 and I am currently attending UNC again for my master’s degree in Literacy.

When I am not teaching, I love to spend time with my family, spend time in the outdoors (hiking, running, and snowboarding). When I’m not doing one of those activities, I enjoy going to the movies or traveling. I am also a Colorado native who is proud to be a Disney nerd and Potterhead (aka Harry Potter nerd).

I look forward to getting to know each and everyone of you. Let’s have an amazing school year and go Stallions!

Alex Prewett - Special Education Teacher

I have been teaching in Colorado for the past 19 years. I graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. I began teaching in 2002 helping middle school students learn to read. In 2006, I went back to school and received a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Literacy. After teaching in the classroom for a few years, I found a calling to work in special education and went back to school to get a 2nd masters degree in Special Education from Regis University. I have been teaching special education since 2013. I love being a special education teacher!

In my free time, I love to go biking, hike and spend time with my family and friends.

Heather Downing - 2nd Grade

Hello, I’m Mrs. Downing!

This will be my first year of teaching! I just recently graduated from Western Governors University and I’m very excited to be teaching second grade. During my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, and going to the mountains. I was born and raised in Colorado and I’m married and have two children. I can’t wait to meet my students and have an amazing year together!.

David Popp - Middle School ELA Teacher

I am excited to join the Carbon Valley family and bring my east coast background to the team. I have an appreciation for diversity and look forward to meeting each student at their appropriate level while challenging each of them to think holistically about their personalized education. I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of Northern Colorado and am entering my eighth year of teaching at the middle school level. If I am not in the classroom, you can find me playing Ultimate Frisbee and traveling this vast country
